Topic Talk—Holiday Hodgepodge!
November 26, 2008 by jyl johnson pattee · 3 Comments

Today’s Topic Talk post is a hodgepodge of shopping tips, best buys, holiday pic tales, and Black Friday stories. We are thankful for the great GNO Gals for their submissions!
- Abby at Steals and Deals
- Elizabeth at Parenting Pink
- Holly at June Cleaver Nirvana
- Jamie at The Heiner Clan
- Julie at The Cool Mom Guide
Steals and Deals offers several tips for buying gifts on a budget. Here’s a great one:
Don’t pay full price for anything. This might sound like an impossible task, but with the internet at your disposal, you have a grand tool to accomplish this, even if you are not making the final purchase online. Every time I “checkout” online I open up a new tab and search Google for online coupons. 99% of the time I find a 10-30% discount code, or a free shipping code, or a dollar amount off when you buy a certain amount like $10 off a purchase of $30. I always check “Steals and Deals” for their most recent posts to see if there is a tip I can use for this particular purchase.
Parenting Pink highlights fab finds for girls. Yep! They are all pink just like this Roadster!

June Cleaver Nirvana talks about a topic many of us can relate to—snapping the perfect holiday pic, or not! If you haven’t read Holly’s blog before, don’t delay another minute. She’s got humor coming out her ears!
The Heiner Clan poses the question: Do You Black Friday? Then, she shares her thoughts. Can you relate?
I think part of why I love shopping on this day is because I have money to spend. I am almost expected to spend. I am not just spending frivolously. It’s for Christmas, so it’s ok. I think of everyone on my list and what great things I will find at a great deal. I started going out years ago and think of it as a tradition now. Sometimes I go by myself, sometimes I talk my sisters into going with me.
The Cool Mom Guide, provides a great “must haves” list for kids from 9 to 92 like this great Nintendo Dogs for boys!

Topic Talk—Holiday Shopping
November 25, 2008 by jyl johnson pattee · 2 Comments
Enjoyed GNO Monday night? Had fun getting to know other GNO Gals? Here’s a way to get to know them even better… through their blogs.
Give it up for these GNO blogesses for giving us a great start to our holiday shopping season!
- Barb at The Coupon Cupboard
- Cindy at Mom Maven
- Cori at Notes of Complicated Simplicity
- Debbie Delicious Baby
- Mamanista
The Coupon Cupboard offers great advice for eBay shopping. New to eBay? eBay veteran? You’ll love this post.
The holiday crunch is right around the corner. Don’t let this become another year of scrambling for gifts and paying much more than you have to. If you’ve never tried eBay before, now is the time!
Some shy away from eBay just because they’ve never tried it before, some have heard horror stories about items paid for and not received, while still others have preconceived notions that eBay is too confusing and not worth the effort. Not so! Buying on eBay is easy, you’ll save money, and best of all, it’s fun!
Mom Maven promotes gift-card presents, but also includes some fantastic watch outs
for using them.
…Complicated Simplicity talks about one of her favorite traditions—Black Friday:
Black Friday. You either LOVE it… or HATE it.
For me? Deal hunting is a year round sport and in my family,”Black Friday” is not just a day to shop …its a day of tradition! We look forward to it all year long!… I’m serious! It’s right up there with Christmas…and why shouldn’t it be? Next to getting shoes, handbags or diamonds … getting an amazing deal is one of the few things in life that puts that twinkle in a gal’s eye…. and actually getting a deal ON shoes, handbags or diamonds? OBVIOUSLY, the ultimate Utopia.
Delicious Baby provides terrific tips for traveling with children this holiday season. This was one of my favorites:
Blue Painter’s Tape or Duct Tape
My articles on 10 Reasons to pack Duck Tape when you travel and Babyproofing using blue painter’s tape were so unconventional that they got a lot of attention when they were first published. If those don’t convince you to pack a small roll of tape, consider the fact that BlueTape is endlessly fascinating for toddlers, and a great way to make a (removable) race car track on your hotel room floor.
Mamanista, in the hottest toys for 2008 section, reviews many great products that promote “creative pretend toys,” such as this one.
Play tents create special spaces for their little occupants. My mom used to toss a sheet over two chairs and this simple cave miraculously transformed into whatever I could imagine. If you are looking for something more substantial, your little one will love the Gigatent Fantasy Palace Play Tent (Amazon – $48). Another favorite is Le Cafe ( KB Toys- $40).

Topic Talk—Chatting for Charity!
November 18, 2008 by jyl johnson pattee · 1 Comment
I am choked up writing this. I just jumped off of Twitter after nearly 6 hours of tall tweeting, trying to keep current with the short, but speedy conversations. In the flurry of excitement, I observed more than 100 women and a few men, stepping past mere socialization into the realm of service. 100+ people—most of whom have never met IRL, who were gathered for a greater cause than conversation…

…who were gathered to find a cure. A cure to help families facing hunger this holiday season. A cure to provide as many families as possible with a Thanksgiving dinner. And, in these few hours, with little preparation beforehand and less marketing, #GNO Guys and Gals raised more than $1200 for Feeding America. And, that is just from tonight. Who knows how much more we can raise by Friday, November 21 when the charity ends!
So from us…
Your #GNO Gal Pal, @CarissaRogers (with her daughters)

And your #GNO Gal Pal, @jyl_mommygossip (thankful for her two boys!)
…thanks to everyone who participated and who may still participate—who gave with their hearts and their hands, who encouraged, who participated, who made GNO GIVES a success!
Here’s your chance to get to know just a few tweeple from the wonderful group that is #GNO! Check out their blogs to learn more about them!
- Deanna at The Gratitude Circle.
- Renee at Cutie Booty Cakes.
- Mommy Wizdom.
The Gratitude Circle writes about Taylor Fitch, Miss Teen America, and how she gives gratitude for helping children with special needs. Deanna, in a personal note to #gno, writes:
The holiday season for me really starts in November (which did you know is actually National “I Am So Thankful Month?) We love thanksgiving. My husband and I love to prepare the meal together and spend the day with my family eating traditional food and watching football (our favorite family activity)! We always use the Thanksgiving weekend as the kick off to decorate for the holidays, too. We enjoy doing this early so that we can thoroughly enjoy our decorations all through the month of December.
I will be hosting Christmas Eve and a small Christmas Day at my house this year. My Christmas Eve will be really special this year. My grandmother passed away this year at the tender age of 90. Christmas Eve was always her holiday—a traditional polish Christmas Eve. In tribute to her, I am hosting dinner this year in her memory with my aunt, uncle, cousins and my family. It will be very meaningful to all of us.
The holiday time can be so stressful…it has become quite commercial and a bit demanding of our time. It’s important to reflect and think ahead of time how to spend your time and with whom. What will make it special for you? How do you want to feel (or not want to feel)? What can you do to go out of your way for someone in need to help them to have a grateful and fulfilling holiday?
Cutie Booty Cakes shares this sweet picture of her mom, snuggling with her grandson. In this post and the one below it entitled, “Gratitude,” she shares her grateful spirit with us.
Mommy Wizdom talks about the temptation to indulge and reminds us of the people all around us who may be less fortunate and ways in which to help them:
There are people in the world who are starving! And I don’t mean the children in Ethiopia that our parents taunted us with… I mean children in our own neighborhoods (yes, yours too!) who can’t afford to buy lunch at school on a daily basis. Whose parents work 3-4 jobs just to make ends meet.
My friend’s daughter goes to school with a girl who cannot afford to buy lunch. My friend packs two lunches for her daughter to take to school. This may very well be the only meal this girl gets all day.
Hunger is very real. Please, don’t discount its existence.
If you don’t believe that it can be happening in your neck of the woods, click here, type in your zip code into the food bank locator on the bottom right. There you will see hunger statistic for your area. I guarantee you’ll be surprised. I was surprised about mine!
Thanks to today’s featured GNO Gals for extending the topic of service, giving, and gratitude beyond GNO and into our week.

Topic Talk—Thanksgiving Comfort Food!
November 15, 2008 by jyl johnson pattee · 3 Comments
Today’s GNO Gals bring us more delightfully delicious dishes with a touch of comfort—as in comfort food. Welcome:
- Alice at Plain Cook.
- Beth at Coming Up for Air.
- Chef at I’ll Make a Foodie Out of You.
- Kelli at Gohn Crazy.
- Nicole at Pinch My Salt.

Creamy Mashed Potatoes picture courtesy of Nicole at Pinch My Salt.
Alice inspires us to go crazy with cranberries this season with her many recipes featured on plaincook.com. Here are a few:
Cranberry Jello
Cranberry Pineapple Jello
Cranberry Jello Salad With Port Wine
Fresh Cranberry and Cream Salad
Cranberry Pecan Salad With Feta Cheese
Coming Up for Air reminds us what Thanksgiving is about and that it is bigger than our corner of the world. She inspires us to think globally:
… we have taken a break from our normal history routine to learn about Thanksgiving across the centuries, across the world, across religion and across tradition. Thanksgiving is not just something we Americans celebrate because of the pilgrims. Thanksgiving has been celebrated for centuries by many different countries and cultures as a way to express thankfulness for the harvest, for protection and for the blessings of nature. So far, we’ve learned about the Chinese celebration Chung Ch’ui – which starts with the celebration of the moon’s birthday on the 15th of August. We’ve learned how the Greeks and Romans celebrated the harvest and the stories of their gods and goddesses. And we’ve learned about the Jewish holiday Succot and what a beautiful expression of thanks this festival is. Tomorrow we learn how ancient Egyptians celebrated harvest.
I’ll Make a Foodie Out of You shares family holiday tips from her pastry-chef perspective. My favorite? Her delicious recipe for marinated asparagus wrapped in phyllo dough. I am drooling just thinking about the yumminess! I may not be able to wait until the holidays to try out this tantalizing treat.
She also provides some basic, but expert advice like the following:
Sugar Cookies boring you? Then make a huge batch and seperate them into smaller ones. Add different extracts, or maybe even some citrus peel and your completely changed it into something edgy. I like to take my sugar cookie dough left overs and add lemon zest with a little orange blossom water. Think high end tea party, they are ungodly delicious.
Gohn Crazy shares her first Thanksgiving meal with us. Can you almost taste Thanksgiving after seeing this pic? Mmmmmmm!
Pinch My Salt shows off comfort food at its best with the creamy mashed potatoes featured above and this amazing batch of sweet potato rolls. Once again, we appreciate Nicole for being our guest tweet this week. It has been a treat to visit her blog every day for yummy recipes and beautiful pictures. Check out her holiday series throughout this season for wonderful holiday recipes.

Thanks to today’s featured GNO Gals—and everyone that participated this week in Topic Talk—for their mouth-watering pictures and yummy recipes. Next week’s theme is giving and charity in celebration of our live auction to help provide Thanksgiving meals to families facing hunger this holiday season.

Topic Talk—Holiday Dishes & Drinks
November 13, 2008 by jyl johnson pattee · 3 Comments
Today’s GNO Gals share a variety of holiday dishes and drinks. You’ll want to read all the way to the bottom of this post, which will make you feel like you just licked the bottom of the cake-mix bowl. It’s that good. Let’s hear it for:
- Brandie at Joy of the Kitchen.
- Brandy at Not Your Average Soccer Mom.
- Cindi at Moomettegram’s Musings.
- Joy at All Because Two People Fell in Love.
- Tori at Thoughtfully Simple.

Chocolate Mini Marshmallow Velvet Fudge picture courtesy of Moomettesgram’s Musings.
Joy of the Kitchen shares a family Christmas tradition—Persimmon Cookies—and this story:
Several years ago, our family gathered at the beach for Christmas. My mom was living there at the time, so we crowded into her oceanside condo. Let me tell you, it was rough. (Ok, it was cold, but when I’m walking on the beach I just don’t care!) Anyway, Grandma brought a HUGE batch of cookies with her. All I remember was my uncle grabbing his coffee can full of cookies, tucking them under his arm and threatening (jokingly?) anyone who touched his stash.
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my family and I do.
Not Your Average Soccer Mom ponders whether to brine or not to brine her buttered and seasoned turkey. What do you think?
Moomettesgram’s Musings refers us to two recipe posts:
Chocolate Mini Marshmallow Fudge (shown above)
Bacon Cheese Roll Up Appetizers
All Because Two People Fell in Love absolutely recommends brining your turkey and provides great instructions and this explanation:
I brine my turkey-Alton Brown from the food network swears by it and lets face it the guy knows what he is talking about so I trust him. Basically it is just soaking your turkey in a salt water (a few other spices) bath for about 8 hrs. It does something with something (kinda science talk I don’t understand) but it makes it very juicy.
Thoughtfully Simple adds this tasty drink to the mix today. What meal would be complete without a delicious drink and dessert? How much better then if you combined the two as Thoughtfully Simple does with her pumpkin martini:
Thanks to today’s featured GNO Gals for their mouth-watering pictures and yummy recipes during this week’s holiday food-themed Topic Talk.

Marshmallow Sweet Potatoes courtesy of Southern Plate.
Southern Plate provides perhaps the sweetest of the sweet treats—chocolate cobbler (shown below) and chocolate gravy.
The chocolate cobbler makes the perfect holiday dessert.
And, the chocolate gravy can be packaged up and given as delicious neighbor and friend gifts.
Check out the Southern Plate cookbook for more mouth-watering goodies.
Momma Cooks Cooking shares two delicious Pampered Chef recipes. Check out her Iced Gingerbread Cookie recipe for a sweet treat.
The Butler Diaries writes about holiday traditions and memories. She says:
I’m sure that you all know how quickly the Holidays can sneak up and before you know you are scrambling for just the right gift and groceries. Those wonderful ingredients to make that one special dish that you, your spouse, kids, Uncle Harry, Aunt Millie, or Cousin Bob just can’t live without at Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, a tradition.
Every year for 32 years, the same tree was put together and decorated on December 6, my birthday, pop corn strings were made and hot chocolate topped it off. Three years ago, I had to give up the tree and buy a new one. No tree will ever be as beautiful to me as the one I grew up with. Keeping tradition, we still put the tree up and decorate it on December 6 and there is always hot chocolate.
Check out her hot chocolate recipe and other yummy holiday food ideas in this post.
Give Me a Minute… shares this tasty treat—eggnog cheesecake bars. Mmmmmm!
My Recipe Box in addition to her yummy Cream Cheese Pie recipe, shares this recipe for daily living:
1 c. love
1 c. patience
1 c. forgiveness
1 c. charityMix well with loving heartstrings and serve 1 tablespoon every morning, noon and night.
