American Express Giveaway: Win a $50 American Express Gift Card (5 Winners)

giveaways!

Summer months bring plenty of fun, but sometimes fun can mean spending money, maybe even more than you have! Using a prepaid card is a great way to stick to a vacation or ‘summer fun’ budget.  You load the card with funds upfront, and then you can only spend what’s on the card—so there’s no risk of overspending. The new American Express Prepaid Card has no activation or monthly fees, is safer than cash and can be replaced for free if lost or stolen!   You can get the card online and use it for everything from gas to groceries at millions of locations that accept American Express.

The card also comes with some of the same benefits you’ve come to expect from American Express —like Roadside Assistance, Purchase Protection, Global Assist and Amex Selects. The card is also a smart budgeting tool —you can view real-time transaction history, monitor spend, and receive alerts when funds are low or a when a transaction has occurred.

And you can get one for yourself and for others— like elderly parents, family members, colleagues, babysitters and contractors.

One tip for budgeting money is to see how much money needs to go out in bills, and make sure to budget for entertainment. Also, put all your change in a jar and when you want to go on vacation, cash your change in.

This is a great tool for high school students to learn budgeting before they “graduate” to a debit or credit card. I used to use one of these for my son and gave him his allowance on it. He got to use it for all the fun things teenagers like to do (movies, eating out, shopping, trips, iTunes, etc.) but he learned quickly that when the money was gone, the card didn’t work! We didn’t incur any overdraft fees and it made him a lot more responsible when he got his own debit card, and them a couple of years later, his first credit card.

I checked out the card on the American Express Prepaid Card website. My tip for budgeting money and having fun is to use a credit card responsibly. You can collect points and redeem them for restaurant gift cards and treat the family out to a nice dinner!

My favourite way to budget money when I was in university was to only spend the bills/use my debit card. I collected all my change and put it in a ziploc. When it was time to go out to the movies or buy something I wanted just for me, I only used the change. It was my way to budget, because I watch my cash, but still have some fun with the change.
