It doesn’t matter how cold it is outside when there is someone in your life—or in your own blogosphere who is willing to warm you up with kindness.

Georgie Johnson, author of the Decisionally Challenged blog, is just that kind of someone. As a married mother of 3 living in Oklahoma, and an avid blogger, she decided to spread a little cheer, right when everyone needed it most.

This past Christmas season Georgie decided to do a little outreach. She create the SSS—Secret Santa Soiree—as a way for bloggers to spoil each other a little—but in a sweet and secret way. The rules were simple: fill out a questionnaire so your exchange partner would know a little about you, buy a gift in the $10-15 range, ship it off, and most importantly, keep it a secret.

In no time at all, more than 70 women had signed up. And better still, not ONE of those women neglected to fulfill their promise of a gift and of course, keeping it quiet.

Georgie wasn’t trying to grow her own blog. She was simply trying to spread a little joy. And she certainly did—in 70 big and small ways. After all the gifts were exchanged, the gift givers were revealed, creating new friendships and recognizing these women, who were willing to give of themselves in such a hectic time. So many of these women enjoyed the giving feeling so much that it carried over into their daily lives.

True to her giving spirit, Georgie says much of the credit for the entire event goes to her friend Amy who did a lot of the work and ‘kept her sane.’

And don’t worry, if you missed the SSS last year, Georgie will be ‘Momming It Forward ‘ again. The 2nd annual SSS will be taking place this holiday season!

A few years ago, Pediatrician Dr. Joanna Dolgoff decided she’d had enough.

She was watching one overweight child after another enter her office. She knew the stats: One in three children are overweight and obese. And 80 percent of those kids will struggle with weight problems as adults. And she knew this problem was growing. In the past 20 years, the number of overweight kids has increased by 50 percent.

Pediatricians spend an average of 7 minutes with their patients during a visit. With immunizations, general health questions, and a parent’s basic concerns, how is their possibly time to tackle the issue of weight? Adults have so many options—South Beach, Atkins, Jenny Craig, etc.—but there hasn’t been a plan designed purely for kids.

So, Dr. Dolgoff made a decision. She left her practice and started out on her own. Friends and collegues thought she was crazy. But she isn’t. She just wants to combat this national problem—one child at a time.

She created her own clinic in New York—Dr. Dolgoff’s Weigh. The program is based on a ‘traffic light system’ - there are red light, yellow light, and green light foods. Dr. Dolgoff, says, “I don’t believe in forbidding foods. I am instead teaching clean, healthy eating.” The program is portion controlled but geared towards the specific needs a growing child faces.

With a 96 percent success rate, Dr. Dolgoff couldn’t be happier, “This is the greatest thing I have ever done. I am fulfilling a need, doing what I love, and helping people. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Take 10 year old J.D. for example. She lost 27 pounds in 6 months.

Dr. Dolgoff’s Weigh offers kids and parents two different options—an ‘In Office’ program and one online. When she visits with kids in person, she is able to use their breath to learn their metabolic rate and can create a specific plan for that child in terms of diet and exercise. They typically visit her office once a week. The online program uses norms based on height, weight and gender to help kids and their parents set goals. All exercise is based on things her patients like to do.

Dr. Dolgoff often finds that the ‘mom’ in her overrides the ‘doctor’ in her. Having two small children at home, she knows it would be unfair, if not impossible to expect a child to attend a birthday party and not eat cake. So, she factors these things into her programs. She explains, “This is about developing a healthy relationship with food. It is not about what you look look. The goal is to be healthy, not skinny.”

Dr. Dolgoff has plans to open clinics nationwide. Educated at Princeton and NYU School of Medicine, she is excited to be reaching families outside the immediate NYC area.

Defined by clean lines and solid colors, Resa’s dream of…

“There’s no reason A-listers should have all the cool stuff, right?” Resa Troyer asks while we’re talking about the motivation behind her thriving business, Resa Design.

Defined by clean lines and solid colors, Resa’s dream of providing moms with baby and toddler stuff that qualified as “cool gear I wasn’t embarrassed to carry around,” is a reality.

Resa Design officially launched more than 3 years ago, but was in the mind and hands of mom, Resa Troyer long before that. “I have been sewing since I was five and always been an entrepreneur of sorts.”

Before she officially started her business, Resa had begun to make baby blankets and give them away as gifts. She’d had a hard time finding gifts she felt matched her mom-friend’s sense of style and that difficulty continued as she searched for baby items during her own pregnancy, “I couldn’t figure out why everything was geared towards a baby that could care less what color his diaper bag was or what print was on his blankets. What I did find available was expensive and therefore not available to me.” So, Resa started searching for great fabrics. It wasn’t long before the requests started coming in and Resa began to sell her creations.

In addition to the fancy, soft fabrics, Resa has taken the ‘practical’ into account. She explains, “Our accessories were all designed out of needs I had as a new mom: a changing pad that actually covered the gross bathroom stall changing table, a burp cloth that was cute, absorbent and didn’t have farm animals on it, or a bib that didn’t hang to baby’s knees and still not soak up the gallons of drool.” And she aims to keep her items affordable, but that definitely doesn’t mean cheap! Resa says with a smile, “More important to me than price is quality. I am a bit of a perfectionist and will have a product redone as much as I can to make sure it meets my high standards.”

A business that once allowed her to set certain days during the week as ‘work days’ now requires attention every day. A tough balance for this mom of two little ones, but she manages. “What started as a hobby is now a full time job.”

Resa’s hard work, attention to detail and eye for beautiful designs now benefits another very special category of moms.

In addition to being an entrepreneur, Resa has also always been a giver, “it is part of my DNA. It is a huge part of the values we instill in our children and part of our mission as a family.” So, joining forces with Operation Shower – an organization that provides a ‘baby shower in a box’ to military wives – was a natural fit.

“I love the idea behind Operation Shower. I can only imagine what the moment looks like when the giant brown Operation Shower box arrives at an expecting mother’s door. She opens it up, and dozens of adorable baby items are neatly packaged and ready for her baby. Wouldn’t you love to be a fly on the wall at that moment?”

First learning about Operation Shower on a blog, Resa fell in love with the idea of getting involved. Finding out OS’s main offices were in her own city, and then leaning that they loved the idea of gifting boutique-style goods to deserving moms made them a ‘match at first sight’.

Resa began by making a few ‘quiet’ product donations for boxes being sent out, but has since established an online registry for Operation Shower. As you purchase a burp cloth for yourself, you can easily add a burp cloth for a military-mom-to-be. All the products on the registry are sold at ‘cost’ – so about half-price and they are shipped free of charge on your behalf. Resa explains, “For as little as $4, you can send a Resa Design product to a military mom-to-be. That’s like skipping ice-cream at the grocery store for a week. It is totally doable.”

Resa specifically chooses to do this kind of ‘mom-it-forward’ gifting, instead of celebrity gifting, since she would rather, “our gifts be a real, true blessing to someone, and not just another baby gift”.

Three other companies have joined Resa’s efforts, Julian and Co, Little Allouette, and Wet Happened. In April and May, Resa did a Mother’s Day drive, donated 20% in goods to Operation Shower for every $50 purchase and was able to cover over 25 gifted items. These items were given as part of Operation Shower’s Mother’s Day event at Ft. Hood and Scott Air Force Base.

The online registry is up year round. Tribute cards are also available if you would like to make a donation in someone’s honor. Be sure to visit Resa Design and Operation Shower to learn more.

This is a family picture we took this…

My family is…well…kind of noticeable in the Czech Republic. And not because we asked for any notoriety, but simply because we posted family pictures on the internet.

Here is the basic story…

This is a family picture we took this past October. I posted it on my blog and Facebook to share with people I care about. We loved it so much, we used it as our Christmas card.

Apparently someone else loved it so much, they swiped it, and used it to advertise for a high end grocery store—in THE CZECH REPUBLIC. That is nearly 5000 miles away from where I live. Note the langauge at the bottom of the ad.

An old friend from college (who I’m recently back in touch with thanks to Facebook) lives in Prague—and nearly scared his wife half to death when he yelled out in surprise as he drove down the road. The picture is life size—maybe even bigger.

I have felt a variety of emotions about this….this intrusion into my life. I have been alternately flattered (really? Of all the pictures they could have stolen, they chose ours?) to confused (how did this happen?) to offended (who do they think they are?)

But what has been most amazing to me since I shared this story is the outpouring of opinions, shared thoughts and feelings, suggestions and offers of help.

Some moms offered to ask husbands/cousins/friends for advice on what I should do. Some didn’t wait to ask if I needed anything, they called ‘people in the know’ and then emailed me with advice and additional help. Many suggested I laugh it off, some yelled SUE!, others said, “I’m not sure there is anything you can do, but it is a good picture.”

Ninety-eight percent of the people (mainly moms) who contacted me are not people I have ever met—they are people who reached out, hoping I wasn’t too scared. They wanted my world to feel small and comfortable again—not big and unknown. This is what moms do, don’t they?

For that, I am grateful. I’m proud to be a mom. I’m proud to call so many of you friends.

In an instant—snap your fingers—life as you know it can change.

Just ask the mother of two behind www.ManicMother.com.

It has only been a week since Beth’s youngest son, Ezra was bitten by a spider (or tick). Not long after, Beth noticed her son was lethargic and limping. Back to the doctor. Another X-Ray revealed abnormalities in his bones.

Within 24 hours the family is told their sweet 2 year old has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). But wait! Wasn’t it only a spider bite? In less than a week, Ezra has had surgery to have a port placed in his chest and he has endured two rounds of chemotherapy.

And yet, he is still the darling, curly-haired boy he was last Wednesday.

Thanks to a renegade spider, Ezra’s cancer—for which he had shown no symptoms— is caught early and has NOT spread to his brain or spine.

It is as Beth takes stock of where life is getting ready to go, that she recognizes she cannot do it alone: a childhood forever changed, potentially 3 years of chemo treatments, a family with one car who might need to get a sick child to the emergency room at a moment’s notice, the need for an immaculate home to keep Ezra safe and healthy.

So, she writes.

She is honest. She knows what her family has, what they are capable of and what they will need from others. So, she asks for help.

And, she receives.

And that is how moms ‘mom it forward’ a little every day. They recognize the time to give and the time to accept help.

You can visit http://www.manicmother.com for more details about Ezra and for ways to help.

Maureen Day knows what it feels like to experience the joy of pregnancy and the heartbreak of losing that unborn child.

Already a mom to 4 children, Maureen found out she was expecting a new baby in the summer of 2003. She and her husband shared the news with the family – kids ranging in age from 7 to 20 years old. While it was a surprise, everyone quickly embraced the idea.

But their happiness was short lived. In September, Maureen discovered the baby had no heartbeat. She was surprised by the depth of the emotional pain that came with losing that child.

For weeks, she worked her way through the greiving process, only to find that she wanted to come up with a tangible way to help other mothers suffering as she was. And so it was that she created HeavenBorn – a non-profit project that provides booklets and handmade pillows to women who have suffered an early pregnancy loss. The simple booklet provides information on how to handle the physical and emotional challenges of this grief. And, the hope is that the pillow will provide a tangible source of comfort.

Maureen hopes to take moms through the stages she believes will help them to cope with their loss: feel, grieve, hope, remember. She creates the pillows by hand with the help of some generous women. It is her goal to make these pillows available to all mothers who experience this type of tragedy.

Many of the HeavenBorn pillows are now being given to mothers in local hospitals at their time of loss. HeavenBorn exists solely based on donations and volunteers who donate their time to create these small tokens of love. If you would like to donate your time…or you are interested in starting a HeavenBorn chapter in your area, email Maureen at Maureen@heavenborn.com.

Inspiration comes in many forms, but for me, right now, it has taken the shape of a petite brunette. She is sitting across from me calmly drinking ice tea as she talks about her drive to ‘give back’. Photographer, Gina Kelly works with more than 20 charities in the St. Louis area. That’s right, 2-0.

The questions are galloping through my mind, leap-frogging over one another to spill out of my mouth first: How does she find the time? How does she choose who she works with? Does she have a favorite? How does she give…is it time, talent, or money? Why does she do it?

Gina Kelly’s story is amazing. Any given week you can find her photographing (for free) a Mother-Daughter Tea or Bowling Event for little girls with Down Syndrome, flying to the Dominican Republic to document and participate in charity work with the Albert Pujols Family Foundation, (Gina will head to the Dominican for the third time next week) snapping priceless family moments, taking pre-school class pictures, catching a bride and groom in their perfect moment of love, or donating her time to tell the stories of previously homeless teenagers.

But to understand Gina, you need to know where she has come from and how hard she has worked to get where she is.

In the 1990′s, under the tutelage of several well-known photographers in the St. Louis area, Gina explains, “I got a great foundation.” She learned the ropes, paid her dues and honed her own innate talent for getting the best shots, developing a special rapport with her subjects and working quickly. But the chance to use this talent professionally was jeopardized by her personal situation.

A victim of domestic violence, she survived an abusive marriage, only to fall in love with a man who would eventually kick her and her two young children out into the street. A mere 8 years ago, Gina was a homeless, single mom.

The photography business she had started on her own had to close as she needed to make money to support her family. Gina says, “Prayer was huge. I did whatever I could. I painted baby rooms. I gave piano lessons. I worked part time at a local deli.”

But, she continues, “I started thinking about getting on my feet. I was absorbing like a sponge – (trying to understand) how is he or she successful?” Gina began working with another local photographer, “(This woman) enabled me to financially get on my feet and try out new stuff.”

This new beginning for Gina allowed her to blossom into the mother, photographer and giver she had always wanted to be. She explains, “I needed someone to light the fire within.” Her epiphany: the realization that ‘to give would be to receive’. “Prayer was huge. I prayed about my husband, about my home and it all happened,” she says with reverance.

Her philosophy for photography became, “It happened and you caught it (on film)”

This philosophy, combined with her desire to give, paved the way for Art by Gina, which opened in 2001. With this company, Gina has focused mainly on children, maternity and family portraits. Early on, she began ‘doing little things’ to help others. She realized, through work with her daughter’s Girl Scouts, her son’s day care, and a few local preschools that many families couldn’t afford pictures. She wanted to help. Gina explains, “I started throwing in coupons, giving some portraits away for free.”

She continues, “Almost all of my giving is kid based. I did that purposely. I donate where my heart is.”

And her heart continues to grow. Her life has become a beautiful circle. As she has continued to ‘give’, she has been blessed with more work, amazing connections and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. For Gina, this means, a greater opportunity to give of herself.

To continue this giving tradition, to allow for opportunities to help others and to continue sharing her talents, Gina started a second photography company in 2003. Lace Images focuses mainly on weddings, corporate events and charity. Each photographer who works at Lace knows ‘giving back’ is part of the job. They regularly donate their time and talents to charitable events around the city.

This is a woman, a mother, a photographer who gives back, not by writing checks, but with her own time and talents. In keeping with her desire to help kids, Gina was recently walking through The Covenant House, a home taking teenagers off the streets. She noticed that the walls were bare. When told that there was not yet enough money to put anything up, Gina did what she does best, she offered to help. Her suggestion: use photographs to tell the real-life stories of the teens that had been saved from the streets. Gina did it for free. One by one, she has taken these teenagers to the areas of the city where they were found, photographed them, and documented their current triumph.

Also, touching Gina’s heart: The Make-A-Wish Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, the Kurt Warner Foundation, the Pujols Family Foundation (benefitting Down Syndrome), Young Moms of Down Syndrome and the St. Louis Family Church (benefitting inner city kids).

I think we could all take a page out of Gina’s book to begin a new chapter in our lives.

Less than 2 weeks ago, something terrible happened.

A mother and father took their little girl to the hospital.

Sweet Madeline Alice Spohr never came home again.

Maddie lived 17 beautiful, amazing months. In that time, she touched lives and brightened the world of everyone who met her.

News of her passing rippled across the Blog World. Friends and family of Maddie’s parents, Heather and Mike Spohr, reached out to help.

Something happened. One person shared the story of Maddie with another, and then that person passed on the light of this little girl – until hundreds of people were wringing their hands in their own homes across the country—feeling helpless, wondering what they could do to ease the pain of this family they didn’t even know.

Strangers sat at their computers late at night, reading post after post about the beauty of this little girl, about the tragedy of her loss, and sharing their need to help. Crying was the norm.

The color purple became a rally cry—Twitter Avatars changed color, Twitter backgrounds switched to purple, blog backgrounds made the jump.

Heather’s close friend became the source for information. AMomTwoBoys was where you could go for all things Maddie. You could find:

Links to all the amazing tributes to this little girl (close to 500 of them)

Learn about how to donate to the March of Dimes in Maddie’s honor. In less than 2 weeks, more than $31,000 has been raised. I understand 90% of that has been in increments of less than $25 or less.

She even sent you to the websites that had the links for buttons to help the family—neither Heather or Mike are working right now and clearly, expenses are overwhelming.

And that love for Heather, Mike and Maddie continues to spread.

If you want to join a March of Dimes team and walk for Maddie in your home town, SarcasticMom has you covered. There are more than 50 teams nationwide set up in her honor. You can even buy a T-shirt, designed by Heather Durdill.

If you want to know who took the ‘purple’ to heart – SarcasticMomtackled that too. From purple toenails, to hairbows, to t-shirts—Maddie was honored everywhere. The day of her Memorial Service, April 14th, purple balloons were released. As I strolled around the Midwest, I was tempted to ask everyone I saw that day if the purple they were wearing was for Maddie.

And because friends often know just what someone needs—the entire front page of Blog Nosh Magazine has dedicated their entire front page to Maddie and another special group has created bracelets that symbolize the beauty of Maddie—while helping to raise money to offset expenses for her family.

I bought one. I should have it soon.

I will wear it everyday.

Not because I knew Heather. Not because I ever met Maddie.

But because I care. Because I can’t imagine the pain. Because I would want to know that people won’t forget the angel I lost.

If you want to know how you can still help, never fear, there are moms ‘momming-it-forward’ as we speak – and they have the answers.

If you would like to get right to the heart of Maddie – visit her Daddy, Mike and Mommy, Heather.

Pictures are from Maddie’s mom, Heather’s website.

You may recall I announced a Wisconsin blogger’s get together awhile back. The event was to be part of a campaign put together by the lovely ladies at Mom it Forward and would raise money for a great charity that helps Kenyan woman start their own coconut oil extraction business. Those oils are then sold to a company that make them into lotions, soaps and other products.

Besides, it’d be a lot of fun, yo.

I’ve planned a lot of events, and never have the details fallen into place so easily. It was like putting together a preschooler’s jig saw puzzle.

Easy peasy.

One great blogger offered to have the event at her house. Another owns a great online store and donated a gift card for our raffle. Early on, I had a lot of people excited that something local was being planned and looked forward to meeting other “imaginary friends” in person.

But somehow when it came time to collect registrations for the event, the numbers, well…trickled in. In the end, only three of us lovely ladies met for dinner this past Saturday.

Boy, did the rest of you miss out!

Carrie S., Carrie C. and myself (an honorary Carrie for the evening) met at Trattoria Stefano in lovely Sheboygan, Wisconsin and laughed ourselves silly.

It really was a great time. And who would have thought that in a small Wisconsin city, in a teeny little restaurant one could find such GREAT FOOD?!? Honestly, the prices were comparable to that of one of the chain crap restaurants, only Trattoria Stefano featured salads with “organic farm raised Norwegan salmon” and other entres with so many delicious ingredients that our server stood for five minutes at a time reciting them back to us.

(I translated after he left: “A salad with fish, a dish with some meat, and one with noodles, sauce and more meat.”)

We sampled the silky and yumma-licious lotions from Basa Body. (And found that despite how delicious it smells, the chocolate mint soap still tastes like soap if you take a bite. Thanks for that, Carrie S.)

And we laughed.

And enjoyed the fact that there were no little short people yelling, “MOOOOOM!”

And then we saw this guy and the night just got *thismuch* better.

Yes, that’s a full grown man in a nice restaurant wearing a Snuggie. (Who rocked because he didn’t bat an eye when we took his picture. And then told his wife, “You married THIS!” which was super awesome because we all concurred that was something our husbands would say.)

So, big thanks to the Carries for joining me for a super rad evening. Thanks to Basa Body for the lotion and Mom it Forward for organizing such a great chain of events for a great charity. And huge thanks to Angie of Good for the Kids for the raffle prize.

The rest of you — well, we hope you’ll be able to join us next time!

Just a few finishing thoughts:

1) Buying a product from Basa Body or donating $20 to The Pope Foundation (the charity that trains Kenyan women to start their own oil extraction businesses) between now and May 12 enters you to win one of three great gift cards, including a $250 Disney Gift Card, a $150 Amazon.com Gift Card or a $100 Target Gift Card! Click here for more info, or visit the Basa Body site or click on the widget in my left side bar to make a donation. You can still win!

2) If you don’t have money to donate right now, check out Mom it Forward’s “10 Ways to Donate to Charity Without Spending a Cent” article. Good stuff.

3) If you’re ever in Sheboygan, I highly recommend Trattoria Stefano or its “sister restaurant” across the street (owned by the same folks). Their menu was impressive and their prices budget friendly. Plus they let us sit and be all loud for nearly three hours and never once gave us the evil stink eye.

4) Come back on Friday – I’ll be giving away some of the Basa Body lotion. And, no, it doesn’t smell like coconuts.

For Catherine Connors, becoming a driving force for action in her community did not mean traveling to foreign lands or holding a sign to protest for the causes she believed in. She enacted change with a few keystrokes on her computer.

Catherine is a mother, a blogger, and an online social activist.

She became interested in this new outlet of campaigning after interviewing Gloria Steinem, the feminist icon and founder of New York Magazine. In her interview, Gloria told Catherine, she felt like the new realm of blogospheres was at the forefront of a new kind of revolutionary movement.

“A movement wherein we really talk to one another, and listen to one another,” Gloria told Catherine. “A movement wherein the highest premium is placed on telling the truth, and deriving inspiration and power from the truth. A movement that we further with every post that we write, with every supportive comment that we leave, with every empowering conversation that we spark and fuel and fan to a blaze…”

But with Gloria’s encouragement came a warning.

“Never forget that such a movement, based as it is on dialogue and debate, can only ever be a support for action; It cannot replace action,” she said. “Don’t cocoon in your blogosphere. Don’t mistake speaking or writing for acting. Don’t just talk: do.”

Gloria’s message inspired Catherine to try something new.

“I made it a personal mission to do as much as I could to push myself, and other members of my online community, to use this medium for good, and as a springboard for action,” she said.

From there, she began hosting blog actions- asking bloggers to write about causes they are passionate about- doing online fundraising, and raising awareness through online resources.

What to start campaigning for was clear for Catherine – her nephew is dying of Muscular Dystrophy.

In 2007, Catherine founded the Canadian arm of BlogHer’s social action network, which expanded to include Give Good Blog, a program designed to promote social responsibility in blogging.

“My objective has and remains, basically, to promote the idea that we have an important platform in the Internet and blogging, and that we should use it for good,” she said. “Whether that means using it to raise money for charity or support your favorite cause or simply to make time/space to write about things that make the world a better place, every little bit counts. And it’s as easy as simply writing a post, or tweeting a link to a charity, or passing along review swag to someone who needs it. The little things matter.”

The greatest challenge, Catherine said, was overcoming her hesitation to ask her community for help, whether that means asking for their attention, their effort to promote an issue, or even their donations.

“ … Overcoming that kind of fear/anxiety can be difficult, and I think that we all need to do a better job of reminding each other that it’s okay – it’s good – to ask for support in our causes,” she said.

Fears aside, blogging about social activism is something Catherine fully invests in, as she continues to fight the causes and brings awareness to the issues she believes in.

“The beauty of online social activism – it’s easy; It’s accessible; Anyone can do it,” Catherine said. “If you have a social network, you can do it. If you have a blog, you can do it. Sky’s the limit!”
