With the weather really starting to warm up, this is a great alternative to the normal sidewalk chalk and bubbles the kids play with outside all summer. It’s simple and I bet you already have all the supplies you need!

How to Make Spray Bottle Silhouette Art

Supplies:

Here are the supplies you’ll need to make this fun “spray painted” silhouette:

Directions:

To get the paint to spray, I watered it down a little. This was a trial & error process. I would start with a small amount of water and about 4-5 big drops of paint. You want the color to be vibrant and thick enough that it won’t drip. (Note: washable paint would be much less messy than what I used and should still work fine.)

You will also need either a computer & printer or a die-cut machine. You could actually do this project without either using a simple hand-cut shape.

I just Googled (I love that it’s a verb now) an image I wanted—in this case a Mickey Mouse silhouette. If you’re using an electric cutting system, you could find some really fun shapes. A one-piece silhouette shape works best for this.

I cut out the shape and used straight pins to pin it onto a piece of white construction paper. The white paper was pinned and ready to go inside a cardboard box to keep the paint from getting all over. I had the box leaned up against the wall so my cute little helper could get a straight shot!

Get a good amount of paint on the paper, but not so much that it’s dripping a lot. As you can see, you don’t need every inch of the paper covered.

Let it dry for a few minutes, take off the silhouette, and that’s it! Isn’t it so fun?

The possibilities with this are endless! We tried a B (my daughter’s initial) and it turned out just as great!

How cute is this in a frame? My 3-year-old had so much fun with this. Hope you get to try it with your kids as well!

Anything that had to do with arts and crafts could keep me occupied for hours. Though they may not be the most fashionable, these necklaces are as fun to make as they were back in the day.

How to Make Salt Dough Necklaces

Supplies:

1 cup salt

1 cup water

2 cups flour

Toothpicks

Fishing line or ribbon

Paints

Paint brushes

Decorative embellishments

Directions:

If you will be having a lengthy play date gathering, this craft will be loads of fun for both kids and adults. There are quite a few steps involved in the creation process but it is so worth it.

You will first need to make the dough, which can be made before your guests arrive.

A few side-notes: Do not allow children to eat the dough. It’s VERY salty and not EDIBLE.

Keep them from rubbing their eyes while working with the dough—it might burn little peepers!

Set out cookie cutters and allow kiddos to create their own shapes for necklaces.

An adult will need to use a toothpick to make the holes in each shape for stringing. Make extra BIG holes to account for shrinkage when baking the shapes.

Bake shapes—see recipe card for directions.

Allow the shapes to cool, and set out paints, glitter paints, glue and any other desired decorative embellishment. Let the kiddos paint and decorate the shapes.

Give the paint time to dry and then help string the necklaces. These are super special gifts for holidays and birthdays for grandparents and loved ones.

It is only February, but aren’t you ready for spring? This wreath will hang on your front door to welcome spring and your guests. Welcome your friends with a cheery Hello using paints from Plaid.

Craft Project: How To Make a “Hello” Spring Wreath

Materials:

Wreath form

One skein of yarn in spring colors

Scrapbook paper

Foam Letters

Buttons

Hot glue

Ribbon

Scalloped Edge Scissors

Plaid paint (Folk Art paints in acrylic and glitter)

Directions:

1.) Take your yarn and wrap around your wreath form. The variegated yarn will make stripes as you wrap. Once your form is covered, glue the end of the yarn down in the back.

2.) Create the “Hello” banner. For the “Hello” banner, I used a variety of pre-cut tag shapes. You can cut these yourself into any shape you wish or use pre-cut ones like I did. These do not have to all be the same color. You are going to paint right on the paper. One coat of acrylic paint and one coat of glitter paint on each tag. Make sure the paint colors you use match.

3.) Add on foam letters to spell “Hello” after the paint dries. Run a strand of ribbon through the holes at the top and tie on your wreath. If the tags do not stay positioned like you want, add a drop of hot glue to hold each in place.

4.) Now let’s make some paper flowers for our wreath. Take a full size sheet of scrapbook paper (mine was 12 inch by 12 inch paper) and paint it any color you choose. Again use acrylic for the first coat and glitter for the second coat. Allow to dry. Cut into approximately 1 1/2 inch wide strips with your scalloped edge scissors. Fold each strip “accordion” style.

5.) Place two accordion folded strips together to make a circle. Hot glue both ends together.

6.) Turn over to the back and make your accordion circle into a flat flower like shape. Add hot glue to the center. Hold until set.

7.) Turn over to the front and add hot glue in the center, holding until set. You can really add a ton of glue to the back as it will not be seen. Be a little more careful in the front.

8.) Add these to your wreath with some more hot glue. But wait, they need a little something to cover up that ugly middle.

9.) Cover the middles. I found these plain wood buttons at the Dollar Tree and glammed them up with some paint. Again, one coat of acrylic paint and one coat of glitter paint will go on each one.

10.) Place the buttons in the center of your flower shapes with hot glue. Don’t have plain wood buttons? You could paint regular buttons or just use them as-is.

11.) Add a ribbon to the back of the wreath and hang this on your door.

This wreath will be a a lovely touch of glitter to welcome spring into your home.

My favorite part is a tie between the glittery paint and the fuzzy yarn. Maybe when spring sees this on my front door it will feel welcomed!

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and taking the time to make gifts for loved ones really shows you care. I have adapted an awesome tutorial I found for making a paint sample notebook into a personalized booklet of coupons for parents to give to their children. This can be as “green” as you’d like to make it. I used paint chip samples that I found at my local Walmart, along with materials I had around the house.

How To Make Valentine’s Day Coupon Booklets

Materials Needed:

Paint Chip Sample Cards or any other rigid card stock type of paper, including cereal boxes would work

Index cards or printer paper

Stapler

Scissors

Ruler

Glue dots

Miscellaneous items for embellishments, such as scrapbook paper, construction paper, fabric scraps, buttons, brads, stamps (I used a piece from a used aluminum pan for the silver hearts in the picture) — basically anything you’d like to use that can be glued to paper.

Directions:

1. Take your paint chip card and fold one end up, about 3/4″ or so (this will become the bottom of the matchbook style notebook).

2. Cut your index cards roughly into thirds (this made them about 1/4″ smaller than the width of my paint chip cards – yours may vary depending on your sample size). These will become your coupons.

3. Write out your coupons. Some ideas I came up with are the following: 1 Chore Free Day, Read a book together, Play a board game, 1 extra hour of computer time, 1 extra hour of video game time, 1 Mommy date, and 1 Daddy date. Each of mine also have the saying: “This coupon good for:”.

4. Place your coupons inside the short flap of the paint chip, and staple the coupons inside the flap. Fold the long end over and tuck it into the short end. If the long end is too long, just cut off part of the chip, until the end tucks in nicely into the flap, just like a matchbook.

5. Embellish the front any way you would like. I cut various size hearts out of paint chips and an old aluminum disposable pan and stuck them on the cover with glue dots.

I thought this would be a fun gift for a parent to make for a child, but it could easily be adapted for nearly anyone. Get the kids involved and have them make a coupon booklet for someone they love.

What crafts will you be making this Valentine’s Day?

Theresa Jones is the mom of a good-sized family, consisting of herself, her husband, four grown children, 2 high school-aged children, 1 granddaughter, one son-in-law, one daughter-in-law 1 dog 2 cats and one grandchild-to-be (Aug 2012).

She spends a good part of her day working on her blog, Frugal Experiments. It is where she writes about experimenting in frugality, book reviews, product reviews and giveaways. When she’s not writing, you will find her either, reading, cooking, gardening, crocheting, or studying. She is currently enrolled full-time in college, taking a certificate course in Entrepreneurship, with the intent of turning her love of blogging into a business.

Chocolate. Christmas. Community. Children. All of these things are what I love about the holiday season. So, what could be more perfect than combining all four—kids activities, including homemade gift ideas for the neighbors made of chocolate?

Last night, my kids and I were in an edible arts and crafts mode. We got out our supplies and tripled the recipe, leaving us with enough left over to share with three families in our neighborhood as holiday gifts.

How to Make Crafts for Christmas Gifts

Here’s what you need and how to make chocolate gifts.

Supplies

Christmas cookie cutters in a variety of shapes (We used snowflakes, stars, and a gingerbread family.)

Wilton candy melts (We used three varieties: white, milk, and peppermint white chocolate.)

Wilton disposable decorating bags (We needed three, one each for the different kinds of chocolate.)

Cookie sheet

Wooden spoon

Scissors

Wax paper or Crisco (We preferred to grease the cookie sheet, but you may also place a piece of wax paper on top instead.)

Paper towels

Cellophane wrap (We used clear.)

Ribbon

Instructions

Step 1: In preparation, place a sheet of wax paper on or grease a cookie sheet. Place cookie cutters on top of the wax paper or greased cookie sheet. Then, fill a disposable decorating bag about 3/4ths of the way full of chocolate candies (one variety per bag). Microwave for 30 seconds and remove to pat the bag with a wooden spoon. Microwave for 15 seconds. Repeat until chocolate is melted. Once the chocolate is melted, cut the tip of the disposable bag.

Step 2: Squeeze the chocolate around the edges of the cookie cutter first and then proceed to the center, filling the entire cookie cutter with chocolate. When all cookie cutters have chocolate in them, tap the pan on the counter to smooth out the chocolate. Add another layer of chocolate for effect: milk or dark and white chocolate and milk or dark and peppermint white chocolate are especially fun. Also, consider adding sprinkles or crushed peppermint candies to the top.

Step 3: Place cookie sheet in the refrigerator to cool. Once cooled, determine whether you’d like to give the gifts with or without the cookie cutter.

If you are including the cookie cutter with the gift, you are ready to wrap in cellophane and tie with a ribbon.

If you are not including the cookie cutter with the gift, remove the chocolate from each cookie cutter and place in the cellophane, wrap, and tie with a ribbon. And voila! You have the perfect neighbor gifts.

Marie from Make and Takes just published a kids arts and crafts book called Make and Takes for Kids: 50 Crafts Throughout the Year that is chock full of fun crafts for kids of all ages.

Case in point: My boys are eight and 10. My 11 year-old son keeps reminding me that he is too old for everything since he’s a tween. So, I full on expected his eyes to roll when my friends and I got together with all of our kids and broke out the supplies, sharing that we were going to make reindeer antlers. But, all five of our kids ages two to almost 11 had a great time both making and wearing them, proving to me that you are never too old to be a kid—even if you’re a tween with attitude!

How To Make Reindeer Antlers

Making the reindeer antlers is simple.

Supplies

To create this craft, you need the following supplies:

Plastic headband, new or used

6-inch piece of brown ribbon, 5/8 width

2 red pipe cleaners

2 white pipe cleaners

Instructions

Glue one end of the ribbon to one end of the headband. Wrap the ribbon around and around the headband, overlapping each wrap, until the entire headband is covered in ribbon. Add glue to the back of the ribbon at the end to attach it. Let the glue dry completely.
X

For the antlers, twist together 1 red pipe cleaner with 1 white pipe cleaner. Do the same thing with the remaining red and white pipe cleaners. Bend each twisted pipe cleaner into a candy-cane shape.
X

To attach the antlers to the headband, bend 1–2″ of the bottom of one candy cane pipe cleaner around the headband and about 1–2″ away from the center. Twist the pipe cleaner together with itself as you secure it around the headband. Repeat this step for the second candy-cane pipe cleaner, but place it 3–4″ away from the first pipe cleaner so that both candy canes look like antlers, as shown in the photo.

The next step was to stamp those babies on the tie. That’s it!

People like me stand in awe of people like Cindy Hopper. How is it that she has so much creativity oozing out of her pores that she needs her own website just to keep track of all of her ideas, and I can only scrapbook if I can use a spreadsheet to keep track of mine? Her site, SkipToMyLou.org, is a virtual treasure trove of ideas to help moms “craft, create, and celebrate.” It is rife with with everything from handmade gift ideas to scratch-off Valentines how-to’s and printable Mardi Gras masks. I so want to do everything I see on Cindy’s site, but I’m inhibited by a compulsion to make a big production out of it. I envision running to the store for supplies with screaming kids in tow, buying way too many supplies, and pushing said kids to use all of said supplies to make “masterpieces.”

Cindy is the busy mother of three children, two websites (SkipToMyLou and SweetBakingSupply.com), and an actual, newly-opened baking supply store. She draws frequently upon the knowledge of arts and crafts she gained while getting a Bachelors Degree in Art Education, and her practical experience as a mother to children ages 18, 14, and 6. She says, “I love sharing my ideas so that so that [other moms] can make memories with [their] family and friends.” When asked where she gets her inspiration, she says “other people” and “everyday life.” Isn’t it interesting how she sees craft ideas in ordinary things, and I see To-Do lists and Gantt charts?

Cindy’s advice to people like me, to whom perfectionism, lack of ideas, time, or confidence present big obstacles to their creativity: “Change your perspective. Enjoy the experience, not necessarily the product.” It does take a different mindset to be creative, and, although I joke about my rigidity, I can occasionally get into “the zone,” particularly when I write or scrapbook. I’ve felt harmony when words come together in my mind just right to perfectly describe a beautiful song. I’ve felt peace when design elements fall into place on a page to flawlessly accentuate a photo of my beautiful children. There is in fact much to be enjoyed about any creative endeavor.

And, like Cindy, I find that creativity flows better when engaging with my kids. Something about getting down on their level puts everything into a fun/not fun dichotomy, and by-gosh-darn-it, I do wanna have fun! Suddenly, I’m thinking her Egg Carton Caterpillars look so easy, and her Silly Snakes would make for a really enjoyable winter afternoon activity. And I wouldn’t have to go to the store and buy all the supplies for them, since I already have most of them around the house. I don’t have to add another item to my already huge to-do list. I can stop hyperventilating (I didn’t even realize I was doing that!)!

So in the end, maybe Cindy and I are not that different. I too like to “enjoy the experience.” I’ll still use my spreadsheets and lists, but I won’t forget that they are only a means to the end of making memories with my family.

The activity was based on The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. Rainbow Fish is very proud to have beautiful shiny scales but soon learns he will only find true happiness by sharing a scale with each of his friends.

Rainbow Fish Craft

I created a coloring craft page you can print out and have your child design. Depending on their age you may want to work on colors or numbers. Then attach four coins to the fish and tell the child they may keep one coin but give the other three coins to a sibling, friend or parent. You could also use holographic stickers, just cut a section and glue it to the fish so the child can peel them off to share. My kids have been passing out stickers to their dad, cousins, neighbors and grandma. This activity can help them see that sharing will make others happy and encourage them to do it in the future. Children are never too young to learn about sharing our talents and blessings with others.

You can print blank fish or fish with labels. Cut out, then decorate.

Tape coins or stickers to the fish and instruct them to share.

Decorate plastic zip bags like the ocean and put your Rainbow Fish inside.

Sharing in Action

One way kids can give back is to pick out the books they have outgrown and donate them to a local charity. One national charity is Reading Tree. They have drop off bins and will organize and deliver the books to children and schools in need.

According to Reading Tree, 61% of low-income families do not have children’s books in their homes. This program helps get books into their hands. If your books are falling apart, they’ll recycle them for you so it helps the environment too. Don’t let those books collect dust. Share them with others today.
