In celebration of a great decade, Big G cereals are bringing back their “Retro” themed packaging for the fifth time, 80’s style. That’s right, starting February 7 through mid-March, while supplies last, these limited-edition Big G cereal boxes are sure to turn heads down Target’s cereal aisle with their totally radical retro look.

Whether you enjoy it in a bowl with milk or use it to bake tasty treats, cereal has been a staple in kitchen cupboards across America. So many different varieties of cereal have been introduced throughout the years and can still be found on store shelves. These brands have been a part of our popular culture for decades!

In addition to conjuring fun childhood memories through the Retro program, Big G is also making it easy for families to get whole grain. Big G cereals, the ones with the white check, contain at least 9 grams of whole grain, with at least 48 grams of whole grain recommended daily. Cereal is already one of the healthiest breakfast choices you can make and the entire Big G cereal line is made with whole grain. What’s not to love?

On a side note, while Big G is celebrating the 80s, Atari will be celebrating its 40th birthday this year. Can you believe it? What is your favorite Atari game of all time? Keep your answer a secret for now and be sure to share it with us on Tuesday, February 7 as we chat with Big G and Atari about retro memories!

As a mother, making tradions with my family is really important. Like most parents, my husband and I try and find ways to connect with our kids. We want them to someday look back on their childhood and remember all the special things we have done together. I had traditions growing up that I have shared with my kids, and I hope that the things we are doing now will create memories that they will want to pass on to their future families as well.

I recently reviewed a new book called OMG Pancakes. The book was written by Jim Belosic and is filled with fun and creative ways to make pancakes. I was immediately drawn to the giraffe on the front of the book and thought, “There is no way that is a pancake.”

The characters that Jim creates with his pancakes are unbelieveable and will forever etch in your mind that breakfast can be fun and exciting. Sheep, spiderwebs, flamingos, dinosaurs, bluebirds, and monkeys are just a few of the 70 different creations you can make. OMG Pancakes is a page turner and you will marvel at the things you can make with pancake batter.

Jim shares how making pancakes with his daughter is a way they can spend time together. He gives his recipes, tricks, and tools of the trade to make breakfast more creative. I followed his easy instructions on to how to create pancakes with different colors, shapes, and designs. Our family tried a few of the recipes and found that it sparked a few new ideas of our own. Who knew that making breakfast together could be so much fun?

OMG pancakes is filled with new and exciting ways to make pancakes. It has me rethinking breakfast, and for my kids it has them wanting to spend time together making crazy looking pancakes. Take time to think about the traditions that are important to you and start to create them today.

Social media conferences are all the rage these days, especially in the mom blogging space. As companies try to differentiate one blogging conference from the next and identify, based on the unique offerings of each, what makes the most sense for their brand and what will yield the greatest return on investment, they are finding themselves in a creative competition with other brands.

For those who have earmarked large budgets to conference sponsorships, the creative solutions are big and bold… not to mention fun!

Twizzler’s built US landmarks out of licorice and strategically placed them through BlogHer this past month (shown on the right with Melissa from TimeOutMom, Jen from HowTo-Simplify, and Troy from Dadventurous). Elmo accompanied Sesame Street to evo last month. Dr. Pepper/Snapple partnered with KaBoom! to build a playground in a New Orleans neighborhood as part of Mom 2.0 in April. I rode a solar powered merry-go-round sponsored by GE at South by Southwest in March. And to kick off my 2011 conference going, ConAgra sent Blissdom attendees packages to their home both before and after the conference. Can anyone say Orville Redenbacher’s popcorn? Mmmmm!

For many brands, just getting on the expo floor at a conference can cost a pretty penny, especially if they are operating on a limited budget. So, adding in the out of pocket cost to beat the competition can be tough. But, when a brand has a good idea and when a blogger adds her own creativity to the mix, it can mean all the difference in helping a sponsorship go from good to great (in terms of awareness) and sometimes, for less upfront investment. And such was the case with MILK at BlogHer in San Diego.

I already love milk and met the Milk team at Mom 2.0 this past April. So, when they approached me and asked to sponsor me to BlogHer, the decision was a no brainer. But then I found out that the campaign they were promoting was called Thanks a Latte, which is a super cute name and a really fun campaign (check it out on Milk Mustache Campaign’s Facebook page). However, I am not a coffee or a latte drinker. I take my milk plain, thank you very much. They said that was OK and that drinking milk at the conference was not a requirement (I did it anyway!).

Check out this fun video @TroyPattee and I took at their booth. We’ll win a trip to New York City if you vote for us (It’s my favorite city! No pressure!).

I had a lot of fun passing out Starbucks gift cards to people at the conference. Simple. Nice. Made people feel good. Then I saw Heidi from Coast2CoastMom.com at a brunch. She was also sponsored by MILK. We were talking about our post-conference road trip plans when she told me of her idea.

You see, Heidi had road tripped to BlogHer from New York to San Diego with her family. While at BlogHer, she met Flat Harrison in the #gotmilk booth—a life-sized cut out of Harrison Ford with a milk mustache. Troy and I met him too and had a lovely interaction as you can see below.

But Heidi had a better idea. Why leave Harrison in San Diego? Wouldn’t he get lonely? And why leave him there when he could join her family’s road trip to New York?

So, in the most awesome Flat Stanley way, she packed him up and took him with her and her family cross country, visiting corn fields and landmarks along the way. You can see all the fun pictures on her blog. The one with him in wine country with her little boy holding up a carton of milk makes me laugh every time.

So, what is the “it” that makes a brand stand out? What gets your attention? Is it the larger-than-life exhibits, the creative campaigns, the delicious food, the fun events, nice agency and brand representatives, the swag? Probably a little of all or something in particular for each brand. For #gotmilk, it was a mixture of being in the right place, having the right props, and having the right blogger on their team. I’ve heard people talking about it all month.

What have been some of your favorite conference sponsors and why?

Whether you make pancakes from scratch or from the box, they are relatively easy to prepare. Up until last year, I always reached for my trusty box of Bisquick, mixed all of the necessary ingredients, and got to work mixing and flipping the pancakes. One time I went to reach for the box when all of a sudden it dawned on me and I thought, “I can make these from scratch.”

I researched a few pancake recipes and then tried my hand at making them…and voila! That’s when I fell in love with making pancakes from scratch and it’s a good thing I did because my husband fell head over heels in love with pancakes from scratch. Since then, I’ve been creating all sorts of pancake recipes on weekend mornings. I’ve made everything from Pumpkin Pancakes, Blueberry Pancakes, Chocolate Chip Pancakes, and everything in between. Coming from a lover of French toast, that’s saying a lot.

When making pancakes from scratch, all you need are a few simple staple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry and refrigerator: flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, milk, egg, butter and your favorite goodie to fold into the batter right before pouring it onto a hot griddle.

Recipe for Homemade Pancakes

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1 1/4 cups milk

1 egg

3 tablespoons butter, melted

Flavor ingredient (optional)

Directions:

In a bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg and melted butter.

Mix the dry and wet ingredients together and whisk until incorporated.

Fold in flavor ingredient (optional).

Warm a greased griddle or frying pan over medium heat.

Pour the batter onto the warm and greased griddle and brown on both sides. Rule of thumb: Once the pancake begins to bubble around the edge it’s ready to flip.

Tips for Making Light and Fluffy Pancakes

Making pancakes from scratch is as simple as that. There are few items to keep in mind when trying to create light and fluffy pancakes:

Measure ingredients carefully.

Do not overbeat the batter.

Grease the griddle or pan and don’t add batter until it is nice and warm.

Use a laddle, measuring cup or ice cream scooper to ensure consistent-sized pancakes.

Cook the pancakes until the edges start to bubble on the uncooked surface and then flip.

Use a spatula to flip the pancakes and make sure that the spatula head is wide enough for an accurate flip.

Serve the pancakes warm with softened butter and warmed syrup.

What is your favorite breakfast food? What type of pancake do you love most?

Mother’s Day is just around the corner so it’s important to start planning how you are going to show one of the most important woman in your life, your love, affection, and appreciation. So many different varieties of cereal have been introduced throughout the years and can still be found on store shelves. These brands have been a part of our popular culture for decades and some have even shared their debuts with notable and historical events!

Let’s play a little trivia game…

What cereal was first placed on the shelves when black-and-white portable TV sets hit the market? Hint: The character is a bee.

What cereal hit the shelves when Mattel’s Hot Wheels were first introduced? Hint: The character is a happy-go-lucky rabbit.

This cereal was first introduced when Apple Macintosh made its debut. What cereal is this? Hint: Men in chef hats cover the box of this cereal.

What cereal made its debut when Barbie turned 30 years old? Hint: If you eat these, you’ll be lucky all day.

If you guessed Cheerios®, Trix®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch® and Lucky Charms® in that order, then you are right on all of the questions. These cereals have been around for decades and over the years the designs on the boxes have changed to keep up with the times. To take cereal back to the good ‘ole days, General Mills Big G is featuring fun “Retro” package designs, vintage cartoons and promotions from the 50s, 60s and 80s. Retro versions of Honey Nut Cheerios®, Cheerios®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Lucky Charms® and Trix® are available at Target stores while supplies last.

Did you ever moan and groan as you tried to stuff bite after bite of breakfast into your mouth? Well, she was right and I bet many of you are now telling your children this little fact. Eating a good and healthy breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day and helps get you started off on the right foot.

It can be hard to think about breakfast during the morning rush, but preparing a heart healthy meal can be as quick and easy as a bowl of whole grain Quaker oatmeal. No matter your age, following the three E’s – eating right, exercise and education—are key steps to taking care of your heart.

You’re never too young to start taking care of your heart and you’re never too old to be amazing. Quaker wants to help Americans understand that being amazing starts with taking care of your heart. During the month of February, in recognition of American Heart Month, Quaker is donating $1 to the American Heart Association for each of Quaker’s current Facebook fans as of February 1st and each new person who “likes” the Quaker Facebook page during the month of February (up to $250,000). These dollars will benefit the AHA’s new program My Heart. My Life., which helps bring healthy cooking curriculums to afterschool organizations across the country. In addition, Quaker will donate $1, up to $125,000, for each new Facebook “like.” Visit www.Facebook.com/Quaker to find out how healthy your heart is using the Everyday Health Healthy-Heart Checkup Quiz, plus get recipes and expert tips to help you make the best nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle choices.
