My go to when mixing patterns is stripes and florals!  It's simple and easy and most everyone has florals and stripes in their closets!  If you are a little more daring try mixing similar patterns..like polka dots on polka dots.  Just remember that it looks best if one pattern is bigger and one pattern is smaller.  Now go and get your mixing on!
