Casual Beachy Summer Centerpiece
I mentioned last week that we were on vacation at the beach for three weeks. Unfortunately, we're home now. Blah. While it is good to be home, I am going through a little bit of beach withdrawal, so I decided to come make up a beachy, seashell-y, summer centerpiece to bring a little bit of beach back to Pennsylvania. Now here's the thing. I have noticed that when I go shopping when I'm on vacation, I totally get sucked up in the style and decor of wherever I am. When we went to Hawaii on our honeymoon, I came back with several items that featured orchids, pineapples and palm trees. And every year at the shore, I get a few new beachy decorations to take home. And you know what happens when I get home from these vacations? I look at what I brought back and realize that it doesn't fit with the style of my house and actually looks ridiculous anywhere I try to put it. So for this centerpiece, I decided to go low-key. Sure there are seashells, but there are also flowers and burlap. Because who doesn't love burlap? I also love that everything can easily be switched out for whatever season you'd like. Instead of shells, try using seeds, nuts and mini pumpkins for fall or faux snow, pine cones and ornaments for Christmas. Everything was crazy easy to put together. I used some shells I found on the beach as well as some that I had on hand, but you can always find bags of seashells at craft stores, and I see them all the time at Home Goods as well.
Creating the Beach-Inspired Centerpiece
To create the centerpiece, I started with a large cylinder vase {I got it at Walmart for about $4 or $5}. I placed a smaller glass vase inside, surrounded it with shells and placed my flowers inside.
Then I wrapped it with some 5" burlap ribbon. To make the lighter burlap flower, I pleated a piece of 2.5" burlap ribbon and secured it in a circle. I then tacked on a jute rosette {you can find a tutorial on how to make the jute rosette here} and attached everything to the vase.
Finally, I scrunched up a long piece of the 5" burlap ribbon in the middle of the table, placed my vase in the center and sprinkled the seashells all around. I just love how it turned out. It's simple and beautiful, but without being over-the-top, in-your-face beachy. I think it would be perfect for a backyard barbecue, a laid-back dinner party or even just a run-of-the-mill Thursday night. Nothing says you can't get fancy with your family dinners!
