Heart Shaped Crochet Potholder

craftsholidays

Crocheting and knitting all the rage. Just in time for Valentine's Day, here is a cute heart shaped crochet potholder that will be sure to bring a little love to your kitchen.
1 through 4
1.Slip knot.
2. Seven chain (ch) stitches.
3. Slip stitch to the first chain.
4. Three ch to form the first double crochet (dc).  It would probably help to place a marker here.  Dc in the same stitch from which you chained three.  (2 dc in next ch. 3dc in next ch.)  repeat in parenthesis 2 more times.  3 dc in next 2 ch stchs.  Slip stitch to the first ch 3.

5. ch 1, 2 single crochet (sc) in next ch.  Dc in next sc.  (dc in next, 2 dc in next) repeat in parenthesis 7 more times.  Dc in next.  2 sc in next. Slip stitch to the stitch you started with. Move your marker if you are using one.

Ch, 2 sc in next stitch, dc in next, 2 dc in each of the next 4 stitches, dc in next, sc in next 5 stitches, 2 dc in each of next 2 stitches, make a dc, triple crochet, dc all in the next stitch, 2 dc in each of the next 2 stitches, sc in the next 5 stitches, dc in next stitch, 2dc in next, dc in next, 2sc in next, slip stitch to the first chain.  Finish off.

To start this next row, reattach (same color) to the triple crochet at the “bottom point” of the heart.  Ch 1.single crochet in the same stitch.  Sc in each stitch around until you are directly opposite where you started (so you are now where the heart dips inward).  This should be 22 stiches.  This next is a double crochet, but you stitch it into the stitch TWO rows down from the one you’re working on so that the double crochet sort of sits on top of the two rows you’ve finished.  Sc in each stich around to where you started at the point (23 sc). Slip stitch together and finish off.

6. Attach a contrasting color to the point and ch1. Sc in next 2 stitches, dc in next 2 stitches, triple crochet in next, (yarn over four times before you put your needle into the fabric and pull yarn through to form a double triple stitch, Ch1, form another double triple in the same stitch as the first one), triple in the next stitch, dc in next, dc in next, sc in next 6 stitches, dc in next 2 stitches, (triple, chain, triple) all in next stitch, dc in next sc in next 3, dc in next, dc in next, but go down into the stitch two rows UNDER the one you’re currently working, dc in next, sc in next 3, dc in next, (triple, ch, triple) all in next, dc in next two, sc in next 6, dc in next 2, (double triple, ch, double triple) all in next,  triple in next, dc in next 2, sc in next 2, slip stitch into first.

7. Make a back.  I chained 22 and did 20 sc across until I had 11 rows of dc.  Then I did 1 row of sc to make it almost the same exact size as the front.

8. Match the front and back together.  It would be easiest to begin crocheting them together at the corner without finishing off the backing.  I used a half-double crochet to join the front and back because it gave enough play and provided a solid frame for the heart.  Make sure to put one stitch into each of the front.  This is especially important on the sides because the black will not have stitches for you to match up.

1 t 9 through 12

9. I wanted my potholder to hang so that the heart is straight up and down.  To do that, I finished the join all the way around until I got to that position.  Once to the position at which I wanted the hanger to be, I chained 14, then slip stitched all the way back toward the potholder.

10. Grabbing the end of the hanger that is free from the potholder, I stuck it between the two layers of the potholder and stitched it into place with the next half-double crochet I needed for the finishing edge.  Finish the finishing edge around and slip stitch together.  Finish off.

11. Because I wanted the two pieces to be more firmly TOGETHER than they otherwise would be, I framed the heart further by stitching around it with more white yarn.  This is an optional step.

12. The finished potholder.  Lovely!

What items do you like to crochet?

Hi!  I’m Tori.  I hope you’re having a lovely day!  Newly thirty-eight, I am daughter of The King, wife of a Chef, and a homeschooling Mama of five children ages seven months to ten years with around two years between each of them. These children lent to me for a time are amazing!  I am blessed beyond my ability to convey.  I am also a business owner, working to develop multiple streams of income because it seems unwise to rely on one now-a-days.  I am a Christian and work hard to spend some time each day walking with God as well as keeping a prayer in my heart through the day.  Some days I accomplish this goal better than others.  I take care of me by meditating and walking (for enjoyment and exercise).  I meditate.  I am an artist, an author, a fiber artist (my favorite tool is currently a hook), a baker, and more.  You can read and see some of what I think and do at We Keep Choosing Us, TNJNT on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube.  Make sure you sign up for my newsletter at my blog.
