Keeping Cool with Ice Chalk

Every year we like to gear up for summer by putting together a summer bucket list, you know those things we’d like to do before summer kicks the bucket. We stumbled on a perfect activity for those hot summer days – ice chalk.

Here is a recipe for Ice Chalk

Ingredients

1 cup cornstarch
1 cup water
Food coloring (it’s better to have more than one color on hand – not that I know this from personal experience or anything)

Directions

Mix cornstarch and water together until cornstarch is completely dissolved
Divide the mixture into smaller containers to mix different colors
Pour colored mixtures into containers – we especially liked using my homemade Popsicle containers since they gave us a built in handle. Ice cube trays would work great too.

Unlike regular sidewalk chalk, ice chalk doesn’t just draw on the sidewalk super easily. It needs some time to start melting to get good and juicy to really work. Even then the color is a little dull at first, but it looks great as it dries. If your kiddos have the patience to let it melt in to a puddle and then use the stick to draw with, it draws out thick for an even brighter color.

Ice chalk is really two activities – one to make it and the other to draw with it. There’s no baking so the house stays cool. And when you do go out in the heat, you’re carrying your own beautiful block of ice! What more could a mom ask for?
