Children’s Book Review: How Do You Hug a Porcupine?
I really do believe that "reading is a key building block for learning and life." That’s why I was so excited when I was introduced to the Cheerios® Spoonfuls of Stories® program. It was created to help get books into kids hands' and encourage parents and kids to read together (since Spoonfuls of Stories’ inception in 2001, Cheerios has distributed almost 50 million children’s books inside boxes of Cheerios®).
This year, the Cheerios® Spoonfuls of Stories® program will provide more than six million books for children inside specially marked boxes of Cheerios®.
I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak at one of the books that Cheerios will be giving away beginning this month. Published in both English and Spanish, How Do You Hug A Porcupine? is authored by Laurie Isop, the winner of the Cheerios® New Author Contest. The story is short and sweet and answers the question of exactly how one hugs a porcupine. First, however, the story explores how to hug many other animals using repetition and sentences that rhyme. The illustrations are cute and the perfect complement for the words in the story.
I'd say that this story is perfect for children aged 3 and up to beginning readers. It's my guess that the six million families that get to enjoy the book over breakfast are going to enjoy it as much as we did!

Angie is a word loving, sunshine hoarding, book devouring, organizationally devout mama to a lot. When she’s not juggling the tasks requisite of a mother of 5, you will probably find her trying to steal time for her not-so-guilty pleasure of reading and writing, or promoting literacy within her home, community and on-line. She shares her tales most frequently on her blog, Seven Clown Circus.
