Kids Craft: How to Make Salt Dough Necklaces

Making salt dough necklaces when I was a little kid was one of my favorites. Anything that had to do with arts and crafts could keep me occupied for hours. Though they may not be the most fashionable, these necklaces are as fun to make as they were back in the day.

How to Make Salt Dough Necklaces

Supplies:

1 cup salt
1 cup water
2 cups flour
Toothpicks
Fishing line or ribbon
Paints
Paint brushes
Decorative embellishments

Directions:

If you will be having a lengthy play date gathering, this craft will be loads of fun for both kids and adults. There are quite a few steps involved in the creation process but it is so worth it.

You will first need to make the dough, which can be made before your guests arrive.

A few side-notes: Do not allow children to eat the dough. It’s VERY salty and not EDIBLE.

Keep them from rubbing their eyes while working with the dough—it might burn little peepers!

Set out cookie cutters and allow kiddos to create their own shapes for necklaces.

An adult will need to use a toothpick to make the holes in each shape for stringing. Make extra BIG holes to account for shrinkage when baking the shapes.

Bake shapes—see recipe card for directions.

Allow the shapes to cool, and set out paints, glitter paints, glue and any other desired decorative embellishment. Let the kiddos paint and decorate the shapes.

Give the paint time to dry and then help string the necklaces. These are super special gifts for holidays and birthdays for grandparents and loved ones.
