Love Letters and Children’s Books

As you read this, try to keep yourself from thinking, “my man would NEVER do that", because maybe he would.

Instead of buying cards for special occasions like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Anniversary, Christmas, and any other day you would buy your “significant other” a card of some sort, buy him/her a copy of your favorite children’s book. To make it a real gift, write a love letter on the inside front cover. My husband and I have been doing this for almost seven years now and this alone has played such a huge part in recording little family memories and recording our thoughts about each other. Love letters come in all shapes and forms. Our letters consist of silly cartoon drawings, info about the kids and what they are doing, what we are thankful in each other, and more.

If you think that your man may need some encouragement, provide him with a book like THIS. In no time, your man will be hooked. Remind him that your kids (or future kids) will be able to enjoy all the fun books and become smarter in the process…or just give him some sweet incentives of some sort, be creative.

This is why this tradition is worth it:

You have an excuse to add your favorite children's books to your collection without guilt.

You have a regular book that instantly becomes a family heirloom.

When you read your kids a story out of these books, you can begin with the love letter at the front and remind your kids that mom and dad are in love.

It emphasizes the importance of reading, at least that’s the idea; but if all else fails, you have a nice children’s book and a love letter from your man.

If you try this out, here are some fun things you can include in the inside cover of YOUR book:

the LOVE LETTER...funny, clever, cheesy, all of the above
the date and the occasion (always)
where we live at the time
ages of you and your children
cartoons that illustrate a point, even if you are not an artist
activities or current funny sayings from each child
young kids can draw a picture or you can trace their tiny hands
we even started writing in another part of the book details about how we celebrated that particular occasion.

Give it a try, you have nothing to lose. It has been so fun to read these different letters and to reminisce and reflect on all of our blessings through the years. Maybe when we get older we will start writing our letters on the insides of Depends boxes, or send each other secret messages through our Belltones or better yet, tapping out mores code with our canes…but for now, this will do!!!
