PBS KIDS Giveaway: Win a PBS KIDS Summer Learning Prize Pack

“Research shows that children who do not read over the summer regress and return to school in the new grade behind grade level standards and sometimes lower than where they left off in June,” says Kathryn Starke, a literacy specialist and children’s author.

PBS KIDS is offering parents free and educational resources to help power through the last weeks of summer break. Here are a few summer learning tips:

  • Visit your local library weekly
  • Check out your local arts center for fun art classes
  • Ask your kids to “help” you figure out the total cost for this week’s groceries
  • Get them involved in team-building activities with their peers

Don’t forget to mark your calendar and join us on Wednesday, July 17 as we chat about how to keep your kids learning during summer vacation with PBS KIDS. Click here for more details about the party.

  13. My favorite learning activities re science experiments and nature walks! Summer is a great time to get outside and learn about bugs, butterflies, leaves, trees, and animals! In Kentucky we have such great wildlife that it is easy to learn and teach the kids everyday in their surroundings. I also love doing little learning “science” experiments with the kids outdoors. We made plaster of paris volcanoes and let them explode this year, we made our own homemade paper and we made our own fossils a trick I learned online. It is easy to set the kids up learning stations outside on the picnic table and let them get messy and learn. It teaches them and the warm great outdoors offers a great place to just get messy. We also watched several meteor showers this year while camping (just in the backyard my boys are only 3 and 4) and that gave their father and I the opportunity to teach them about planets, the solar system and stars. That was their favorite next to volcano explosions and butterfly and firefly catching!
