Family Picture Stolen and Then Found 5000 Miles Away. Copyright Infringement?

My family is…well…kind of noticeable in the Czech Republic. And not because we asked for any notoriety, but simply because we posted family pictures on the internet.
Here is the basic story…
This is a family picture we took this past October. I posted it on my blog and Facebook to share with people I care about. We loved it so much, we used it as our Christmas card.
Apparently someone else loved it so much, they swiped it, and used it to advertise for a high end grocery store—in THE CZECH REPUBLIC. That is nearly 5000 miles away from where I live. Note the langauge at the bottom of the ad.
An old friend from college (who I’m recently back in touch with thanks to Facebook) lives in Prague—and nearly scared his wife half to death when he yelled out in surprise as he drove down the road. The picture is life size—maybe even bigger.
I have felt a variety of emotions about this….this intrusion into my life. I have been alternately flattered (really? Of all the pictures they could have stolen, they chose ours?) to confused (how did this happen?) to offended (who do they think they are?)
But what has been most amazing to me since I shared this story is the outpouring of opinions, shared thoughts and feelings, suggestions and offers of help.
Some moms offered to ask husbands/cousins/friends for advice on what I should do. Some didn’t wait to ask if I needed anything, they called ‘people in the know’ and then emailed me with advice and additional help. Many suggested I laugh it off, some yelled SUE!, others said, “I’m not sure there is anything you can do, but it is a good picture.”
Ninety-eight percent of the people (mainly moms) who contacted me are not people I have ever met—they are people who reached out, hoping I wasn’t too scared. They wanted my world to feel small and comfortable again—not big and unknown. This is what moms do, don’t they?
For that, I am grateful. I’m proud to be a mom. I’m proud to call so many of you friends.

10 Ways to Donate to Charity Without Spending a Cent

Do you have a desire to make a meaningful contribution, but aren’t in the financial situation to do so? Donations to charity don’t have to be financial. So many of us are experiencing the fallout from this global economic crisis, and at the same time we feel a push to give back—a desire to reach out to others. Those of us who want to serve, who want to make a difference, can do so using our passion, our drive, our connections, our voices, our hearts, and, if we happen to be in a position to do so, our pocket books.
Make a Meaningful Difference Without Reaching Into Your Pocket Book
Here are 10 ways you can make a difference for Yehu Microfinance between now and May 12:
- Promote the fundraiser in your social media circles: on twitter, on facebook, to your friends through e-mail, on the ning networks you frequent, etc.
- Write a blog post about the fundraiser or the charity to raise awareness.

Start using products with coconut oil, especially those sold at Basa Body and Coast Coconut Farms. You can sample the products at all of our live events.- Put on a fundraising “Tweet Up” or event in your area. This doesn’t have to be a huge, formal event or something that raises a lot of money. Meeting up with friends and family at your home, at a coffee shop, or another informal gathering place and spreading the news about this initiative goes a long way in raising awareness.
- Familiarize yourself with the charity’s mission by visiting and reading information on these three sites: http://yehu.org, http://basabody.com, http://coastcoconutfarms.co.ke, and http://coastcoconutfarms.com.
- After visiting the sites, promote them in your social media circles with the goal of raising awareness.
- Determine what you will do today to Mom It Forward to your family, your friends, and/or people in your online networks, etc. Go out and Mom It Forward and help change the world one mom at a time. This applies to moms as well as anyone that has a mom!
When You Make a Purchase, Choose Products With a Proceeds Going to Charity
If you happen to have the means and desire to contribute financially, here’s several ways to make a difference that way:

I started blogging in February of 08. I began my online business in March of 08. I met hundreds of people in just a few short months…! I’ve even figured out Facebook, (Jyl forced me!)
I began writing for the community site BoutiqueFlair in July of 08. I think I had submitted a single article when one of the other contributors there sent me a nice email and was so welcoming to the network! Wow I thought… people are so sweet and I felt all warm and squishy inside.
After I replied to this author I got a zippy email back….
Hel-LO!! Carissa, this is ALYSON! You know, your college roommate? The one you set up on a blind date. The one who MARRIED that same blind date! The one you faithfully exchange Christmas cards with yearly and haven’t seen in 13 years!!

Turns out she’s a Blogging Fool and writer extraordinaire and I didn’t know it? I hadn’t come across her site in my bloggy travels and it took our membership and eventually our contributing to a social media networking site to catch up our real life friendship to our virtual friendships!
Wow? What has Social Media done for you? Do you catch up with high school friends via Facebook? Do you Blog and meet new bloggy friends daily? Is Twitter your social poison?
