Tips for Winter Skincare 101

mehealth & fitness

Winter can be really hard on your complexion—frigid temperatures, crazy winds, low humidity and dry indoor air are harsh and damaging.  But there is hope! Review the following tips from Origins for ideas on how to treat and soothe parched winter skin.

  1. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize. Update your daily evening moisturizer to a slightly richer one.  Once a week, throw on an ultra-moisturizing hydration mask.
  2. Don’t forget your eyes. Hydrating the delicate under-eye area is crucial for looking refreshed and rejuvenated.
  3. Exfoliate. Twice a week, polish away dull cells and surface damage to reveal a radiant new layer.
  4. Protect Yourself. When waging battle against the cold elements, rich body creams are the perfect nourishing treat.
  5. Drink water. Drinking lots of water is key all year round, but especially during the winter months—it’s the easiest way to keep your body looking its best.
  6. Buy a humidifier. During the winter, air becomes super dry. A humidifier replaces lost moisture back in the atmosphere which will protect and hydrate your skin.

you’ve already got the best tips here…for me, remembering to moisturize more often is important (and I’m terrible at it!)…also, the increase is naughty foods right when the weather turns cold and dry is a bad combo…so I suppose my tip is to drink more water, eat healthier foods and not go crazy with the treats (easier said than done!)

Stay away from super hot showers–as wonderful as they are they can help dehydrate skin. Also, for winter hair care, use a smoothing serum to tame frizzies, especially if you live in cold, dry weather like I do here in Utah!

It may seem silly but both my daughter and I love hydrating around the eye area by placing cucumber slices over eyes and just relaxing in the bathtub.
My winter hydrating tip is your #5 – that’s my main tip year-round

I love to use natural skin care products, my tip is to use natural bath soap that tends to have extra moisturizing ingredients in them and follow up with a natural body lotion.

I love natural skincare products like Origins and I feel that moisturizing is key in cold weather. Also to drink plenty of water to hydrate and also take Vitamin E . I also try to eat avocados and eat salmon. Flax oil is also good. I love Origins’ moisturizers and agree with their great tips!

My tip for winter skin care is to not use hot water when showering, try to use warm only because Hot water tends to dry skin out, also use a good moisturizer while skin is still damp!

I always try and put on my moisturizer RIGHT after my bath or shower. That way it locks in additional moisture and keeps my skin extra soft during the long, cold winter months! Great tips from everyone! :)

My humidifier just died but I also try not to completely dry my skin when I towel off after a shower. Leave the skin dewy before you moisturize!

Don’t forget to protect your skin from the UVA rays during winter. Apply sunscreen daily. Even when the sun is not out there are still harmful rays that your skin needs protection from.

Organic coconut oil with can sugar is a great exfoliant/moisturizer

Here my winter skincare tip – Don’t take super hot showers. I know it feels awesome but it also helps to strip your skin of all moisture!

I tweeted and am following on facebook.

My tip is to put extra lotion on before putting gloves on to go outside. I do this everytime I take my dogs for a walk and find that it helps.

In the winter I use a richer moisturize at night. I also use a moisturizing facial mask 2 times per week instead of once. My skin is on the dry side, so this works great for me.

  18. Lisa G on December 13, 2009 9:09 am

Use moisturizer twice a day right after a good cleansing of my face. But, I do reapply some moisturizer when I need to take my daily walks (weather permitting)

  19. Jessica D.T. on December 13, 2009 9:09 am

I use a good moisturizer and did get myself a humidier, I can feel my skin opening up to breath. Great feeling!

  20. CassandraD on December 13, 2009 9:09 am

I use a gentle dermabrasion twice per week, moisturizer every day and a body cream after each shower. In the winter, the body cream is a little richer. It works for me.

My tip is to use a better hand lotion in the winter and to use it more frequently. By the time you realize your hands are dried out, it’s too late!

  22. Caitlin P. on December 13, 2009 5:05 pm

Skip the hot showers and use tons of lotions :) I am a huge Oil of Olay fan . I also never leave home without chapstick!

  23. Tatum V on December 13, 2009 5:05 pm

I don’t dry off all the way after a sshower. I will put my lotion on while slightly damp. I have done this for years and skin is baby soft. Awesome tips for skin care thanks..

Take flax seed oil supplements & use the oil method to cleanse your skin. A few drops of good quality olive oil added to your hand creme is a good thing to do also. And be sure to wear a scarf & wrap your throat area when you go out into the cold.

  28. Charity S. on December 13, 2009 8:08 pm

I try to stay hydrated and I use a lot of lotions and creams. Thanks

The Pedegg works wonders for dry heels. If you have dry feet, slather them with lotion, wrap them with plastic wrap and put on socks before bed and they will be soft in the morning.

For me the best is water, water, water. I keep a glass or bottle around at all times.
