Exercise: Fun Runs for the Entire Family

family funactivities

With cold weather quickly approaching, now is the time to schedule in some family fitness fun. Have you ever competed in a family-friendly fun run? My family tries to do a new one each year. Most of the time the donations go to a good cause, too! These fun runs are typically not timed, so they are perfect for a no-pressure family activity.

In the past few years, fun runs have been growing in popularity. Each with a different theme, these races focus more on getting active and having a good time and less on breaking records. Fun runs are a great way for beginners to get motivated and for families to get and stay fit. Here's a list to help you get started.

The Color Run

The Color Run, also known as the Happiest 5k on the planet, is a unique paint race where participants are doused in different color powder at each kilometer. This race welcomes participants of any fitness level and encourages group participation. My family and I participated in this one this spring. We had lots of fun!

Jingle Bell Run

The Jingle Bell Run is the nations largest 5k holiday race. It’s a more traditional road race, which focuses on forming teams and fundraising for the Arthritis Foundation. Participants are encouraged to dress in their favorite holiday themed costumes and are given bells to tie to their shoes during the race as well. You can choose to get a racing chip for this, but it is not required. Walkers are also encouraged.

Zombie Survival Run

This is a new one for us this year. This is a 3K survival dash to escape the Zombie Apocalypse! Humans will be given two lives (flag football flags with belt) to tie around their waist.  If they lose both lives, they becoming a zombie and start chasing other runners! If you survive the apocalypse and are the first human to cross the finish line, you'll become the Apocalypse Survivor! This event is not timed and beginners are encouraged to try. This event takes place near Halloween.

Trying new fitness events with the family is a great way to get active and create memories. My family looks forward to doing this crazy runs each year! For more info on my families fun runs, click here.
